“Canadians are proud our country’s human rights heritage ad unwavering support of improved rights around the world” said the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper,  who paid tribute to the late Israel Asper‘s role in making the museum  a reality.  “This museum will make a major contribution to Winnipeg’s incredible mosaic.  It will also serve for all those who continue to work to improve human rights for the world’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged people today.”

“It is an honour to be part of the ground breaking for our new Canadian Museum for Human Rights”  Manitoba’s Premier Gary Doer said.  “We are thrilled to hae such a worthy national institution located in Manitoba , a province with a long,rich history of fighting for human rights.  We are proud of the legacy created by people such as Nellie McClung whose efforts led Manitoba to become the first Canadian province in Canada where women won the right to vote.
